The Natural Resources Defense Council recently released their annual each Water Quality Report, ranking 200 of the most popular beaches in the country. This year’s report, titled “Testing the Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches, was a joint effort between NRDC and the U.S Environmental Protection Agency.
According to the report, only one percent of Brevard’s beach water samples exceeded the daily federal water standard for bacteria last year and none listed beach closing or advisory days in 2012.
And so far so good this year, most samples from Space Coast beaches, including some taken Monday at eight county beaches, including popular Cocoa Beach, have tested at safe levels of bacteria.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates up to 3.5 million people nationwide get sick annually from contact with raw sewage from sanitary sewer overflows.
