A Merry and Bright Weekend Can Be Had By All On Florida’s Space Coast!

If the turkey dinner, fist fights at the shopping mall or piped in Christmas music the day right after Halloween haven’t put you in the mood for the holidays, I’m sure I can suggest an event or three on Florida’s Space Coast that will make you feel merry and bright! So buckle in and take notes as we regal you with our TOP TEN Holly Jolly Holiday recommendations for this weekend.

10. The 17th Annual Reindeer Run 

On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner, on Blitzen!  In its 17th year, the Reindeer Run is the final leg of the Holiday Beach Classic Mini Series and is one of the most highly anticipated races on Florida’s Space Coast.  The race will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 in Cherie Down Park in Cocoa Beach. Proceeds from the event benefit the Brevard County Police Athletic League. And same day race registration is allowed.

9. Merritt Island Holiday Parade

Everyone loves a parade!  So, it’s no wonder that the Merritt Island Holiday Parade is still going strong after more than three decades ushering in the holiday season on Florida’s Space Coast. This year the parade has a jump on the rest by being the first in the county.    Scheduled for Saturday, December 1, 2012, the parade will begin and run along North Courtenay Parkway from Merritt Island High School to Edgewood Jr./Senior High.  The parade will be preceded by the Tropical Parade Pacer 2 mile run/walk, which will begin at 9am.

9. A CHRISTMAS CAROL Presented by The Cocoa Village Playhouse

BAH HUMBUG! This weekend the Cocoa Village Playhouse will continue its run of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL.  Directed by Mike Ockrent and featuring original choreography by the fabulous Susan Stroman, the production has quickly earned favorable accolades from both the media and the community. 8. Holiday in Space

Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex is celebrating the holidays with the 2nd Annual “Holidays in Space” a month-long event and international celebration featuring some of the holiday customs from all sixteen International Space Station partner countries. Highlights also include carolers, story time by Mrs. Claus, and an ice skating rink in the rocket garden.

7. Space Coast Light Fest

The Space Coast Light Fest is a drive-through Christmaslightpalooza that’s become one of the most popular events held during the holiday season on Florida’s Space Coast.  Held in  Wickham Park, 3865 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne, Florida, this month-long light fest is a family oriented celebration featuring hundreds-of-thousands of lights. Also, the event features live musical performances, meet and greet with Santa, a Run Among the Lights 5K, a  family friendly “Piratical” rendition of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and even Monday Night Football parties!

6.City of Cocoa’s Holiday Festival With Snow Fest

The City of Cocoa will usher in the holidays on Saturday, December 1 with the official lighting of the Riverfront Park Christmas Tree.  The event, which starts at 5:30pm will also include a variety of holiday entertainment on the main stage, bounce houses, a visit with Santa Claus, play in the snow area and a free movie in the park. To participate in all of the kid’s activities there is a $5.00 activity band fee. Stage entertainment and visits with Santa are FREE.

5. A Big Band Holiday Tribute To Duke Ellington & Count Basie with The Orlando Jazz Orchestra

The Henegar Center for the Performing Arts will bring the swing as they host A Big Band Holiday Tribute to Duke Ellington & Count Basie with the Orlando Jazz Orchestra on Sunday, December 2.  The evening will feature hits by the two two legendary big band leaders and be one show you won’t want to miss

4. Port Canaveral Holiday Boat Parade & Light Show

Ring in the holidays with Port Canaveral as they host their annual Port Canaveral Holiday Boat Parade on December 1, 2012.  The lineup starts immediately at 5:30 pm and will be followed by the launch of, HOW THE PORT STOLE CHRISTMAS, a one-of-a-kind light animated light show that will that will run all month-long!

3. Christmas at the Movies presented by the Space Coast Symphony

On Friday, November 30, experience your favorite holiday scores performed by the Space Coast Symphony paired with their films live on a movie screen.

Israeli violin sensation, Daniel Askerov joins the SCSO to present John Williams’ brilliant adaptation of Jerry Bock’s Fiddler on the Roof. Joining the SCSO will be a chorus to perform Williams’ Three Holiday Songs from Home Alone.  In addition, hear the rarely performed classic scores of Edward Scissorhands, It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Polar Express, and more. 2. The Space Coast Ballet’s The Nutcracker

I’m sure you’re thinking if you’ve seen one Nutcracker you’ve seen them all.  Not so with The Space Coast Ballet’s rendition of the classic holiday ballet.  This magical Christmas tradition is an artistic masterpiece produced by Kirov Ballet trained directors and features breathtaking sets and costumes created in Russia by famous artists!  The two-show production, scheduled for Saturday, December 1, will star principal dancers from around the world and dancers from Space Coast Ballet’s company. Click to buy tickets online

1. Cracker Christmas 

Jump into the holiday season Florida-Cracker style with the ever popular Fort Christmas Cracker Christmas slated for this weekend. Enjoy great southern food, a large craft fair featuring 150 artisans, pioneer demonstrations (i.e, broom making, blacksmiths, basket weaving, rope making, spinning, quilting, lace making, and wood carving).  Even Santa Claus will make an appearance from 1pm-3pm both days! Admission and parking are free for this two-day event.
