Local Events to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy

Today marks the 83rd birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and as a nation we celebrate his birthday with a national holiday of observance on Monday, January 16.  Many communities across the nation celebrate in different ways from peace marches and rallies to live entertainment and plays.  On Florida’s Space Coast there’s no exception with a full calendar of events honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy are scheduled for Monday. 

If you’re on the Space Coast and would like to join in the celebration here’s a complete list of activities planned:

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade & Music in the Park (North Brevard) will be held at the Isaac Campbell, Sr. Community Center and Park at 701 South Street in Titusville, on January 16, at 10:30 a.m.   This year’s theme is “The Strength of a Healthy Village” and will celebrate the life of one of America’s most influential civil rights, political, and social icons.  There will be a parade, food and craft vendors, entertainment and educational exhibits. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at Isaac Campbell, Sr. Park, with festivities immediately following in the park. The event is free to attend.

Martin Luther King Jr. March and Celebration (Central Brevard) begins at Provost Park on Varr Ave in Cocoa, FL and winds it way through historic downtown Cocoa Village ending in Riverfront Park.  The celebration will include vendors and presentations. The March begins at 2:00pm. Anyone in the general public looking to celebrate King’s life and contributions is allowed to walk in the March.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March/Parade (South Brevard) will starts at 9 a.m. at Martin Luther King Library (955 E. University Blvd in Melbourne, FL) and end at the Melbourne Auditorium where there a day of activities in Tribute of Dr. King activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expect speeches, live music and great food! Melbourne Auditorium is located at 625 East Hibiscus Avenue in Melbourne, Florida
1st Annual GSCC MLK Day Car Show From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Brother’s Park, 2547 Grant Street in Melbourne, FL 32935.  There will be a live DJ, vendors, food in conjunction with other MLK Day activities. Trophy and T-Shirt awarded! Free Hot Dogs and fun activities for the kids. $20 entry fee per vehicle.
