Inaugural Marathon, Veterans and Jazzoo Fill Space Coast Calendar This Weekend

I can hardly believe Black Friday is only two weeks away.  Soon we’ll be thinking about fulfilling all those Christmas wishes and planning our Holiday vacations.  I know the thought of it gives me a headache as well.  So what’s the remedy? How about pushing all that garland and evergreen back until a little later and enjoy this weekend on Florida’s Space Coast!

The Brevard Zoo will bring the beat this weekend, with the first annual JAZZOO which is being billed as a full day of music and education on Saturday November 12.  A partnership between Yamaha music, Atlantic Music, and the Zoo,  JAZZOO will feature both a lunch concert and an evening concert with music provided by by classical pianist Brian Gatchell and his wife, vocalist Ginny Gatchell and pianists Christian Tamburr and Takana Miyamoto.

Do you march to a different beat? The  Native Rhythms Festival will be hosted at Wickham Park in Melbourne.  This three day event of arts and culture honors the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas through music.  Admission is free.

And while the 25th Annual Space Coast State Fair continues this weekend at the Cocoa Expo, the Valiant Air Command will open its doors this weekend for free to all active and retired service members, plus Space Coast residents.  Besides an extensive artifacts and memorabilia, the musuem also has a collection of vintage warbirds.  This Veterans Day weekend, the museum will honor service members who served in the Korean war.

Want to go a little Spacey?  Enter the Inaugural Saturn 5k run/walk, which will be hosted by Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex complex on Saturday, November 13. The historic event marks the first time a public run will route runners on a course past full-sized rockets and space shuttle components.  Several hundred runners and walkers will be on hand for the 7:30 am start.

And if you’re yearning for fun of the four legged kind, then you should head down to the 3rd Annual Pool for Pets hosted by Island Breakers Billiards Sports Bar, located at 950 N. Courtenay Parkway on Merritt Island. The event will be a day filled with a dart and pool tournament, an exhibition by 5-Time U.S. Open Champion and 6-Time World Champion Earl “The Pearl” Strickland, hermit crab races, and a showcase of  the Central Brevard Humane Society’s shelter pets. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Central Brevard Humane Society.

If you’re ready to fall into the holiday season early, both the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts and the Cocoa Village Playhouse are decking the halls! Irving Berlin’s White Christmas opens tonight at the Cocoa Village Playhouse in downtown historic Cocoa Village and will run until November 28. For tickets call 321.636.0500.  The Junior League’s Festival of Trees will fill the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts with bows and holly.
