The Inaugural State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon, the newest major certified marathon on the international calendar and host of the USA Masters Half-Marathon Championships are expecting over a thousand entrants to flock to Florida’s Space Coast on Sunday, February 8, 2009 to try their hand at more than $20,000 in prize money.
The Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon will follow a scenic route that includes four bridge crossings for the full and two for the half-marathon. The USA Track & Field certified course will take marathoners to the beach side barrier island and back to the mainland before concluding on main street in downtown Melbourne. If the scenery and $12,000 cash prize isn’t enough to get your adreneline pumping, then the twenty or so musical acts and half a dozen high school cheerleading squads lining the course should!
The last qualifier of the year for the 2009 Boston Marathon, the Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon will also play host to the USA Masters Half-Marathon Championships, which will contain a competing field of many of the nation’s top elite male and female Masters runners competing for the USATF’s prestigious national title and $8,000 in prize money. One of those competitors will be marathon legend Bill Rodgers, the only person to win both the Boston and New York marathons four times.

‘It’s going to be a great race for everyone,’ said Rodgers, who continues to hold numerous Open and Masters U.S. road-racing records. ‘The location, the time of year, people coming to Florida from colder climates, the fact this race is putting an emphasis on Masters runners in addition to the open runners … it’s a nice change of pace. I’m really looking forward to running. This is a good race for the sport as a whole.’State Farm will also award a $125.00 cash prize to the top finishing male and female Space Coast resident in each the marathon and the half-marathon. After the awards ceremony, there will be a party at Meg O’ Malley’s with live music by ZZ Not, the country’s top ZZ Top cover band.
