This morning while soaking in my daily dose of news from Florida Today Online. My eyes were drawn to a vintage album cover of four iconic Brits crossing the ’road’. The image along with nineteen or so other vintage covers instantly took me back to a time when I used to sit barefoot on the living room floor in my parent’s house with my friends flipping through my father’s milk crate full of albums he’d collected over the years.
While the music played in the background, we would read every single word of copy etched on the back’s of the album covers. And debate about whether or not Eddie Van Halen was the best guitarist ever born (yes) or if Niles Rogers of Le Chic hadn’t worked on Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ Album would the song still have been a hit (seriously doubt it).
In my opinion, these simple cardboard covers were art in upon themselves. Many of them were spontaneous or some took more than 900 takes such as Bruce Springsteen’s iconic “Born to Run” in order to catch the essence of music and the band. But irregardless of the road it took to get to the finished product, the image will remain just as famous as the inner contents.
