Brevard Zoo will offer free admission from 9:30 a.m to 5 p.m. at the zoo, 8225 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, to those willing to wear a Mohawk hair style in an effort to promote the new Visayan warty pigs exhibit opening Saturday, June 14.
Found on two islands in the Phillipines, the Visayan warty pig, in which the male sports a lush mane that is often over a foot long and stands upright when the animals are excited or agitated. Originally found on several of the Visayan Islands, this unique pig has disappeared from 98% of their former habitat and now survives in only the most remote forest fragments on the islands of Negros and Panay.
San Diego Zoo has been working diligently to increase warty pig captive numbers and has selected Brevard Zoo as a worthy facility to propagate this rare species. We will be getting a breeding group of two to three girls and one spiffy guy. We will be among only a handful of zoos to exhibit this critically-endangered species.
Zoo officials say the Mohawk can be real or fake, but must be a Mohawk. No other hairstyles will apply. In addition, fathers will get in free to the zoo on Father’s Day, June 15, with proof of child. Regular admission cost is $11.50 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and $8.50 for children 2 to 12.
